Woman warned of common skin care mistakes causing ‘premature ageing’

A good skin care routine is a natural way to help your skin glow at any age and experts have shared some advice on how to best use these products.

They also warned about the common skin care mistakes you may be making that could actually cause “premature ageing”.

Research by beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha found some of the most common skin and make up mistakes that people make.

Not applying skin care products to the chest and neck is one of the biggest mistakes made when it comes to your moisturiser. Applying beauty products to these areas will give these areas the same anti-ageing benefits as applying to your face.

It’s important to remember the neck and check when applying products

Other mistakes included skipping skin care or using the wrong products and pulling on the skin when applying skin care. Experts shared it is important to be gentle when applying beauty products.

They said: “When rubbing in moisturiser, serums or suncream, it’s important to do so in circular motions or to tap it in lightly, as pulling on the skin can make it harder for products to absorb and can cause irritation or dryness.”

Skipping products or not applying them correctly can lessen the benefits and the experts shared advice to get the most out of your SPF.

They continued: “Skipping products means you miss out on benefits like removing residual dirt, oil, and debris from the face while applying them incorrectly reduces their effectiveness.

“For example, applying sunscreen before moisturiser rather than after will dilute the impact of your SPF.”

SPF should be a staple in all skin care routines to help protect against damage from the sun. Sun damage can age the skin by creating age spots and deeper wrinkles and lines, so getting the application wrong is likely to speed up ageing.

They also shared the importance of remembering the chest and neck when applying products so those areas do not start to age more quickly than your face.

They added: “Finally, applying moisturising products to your neck and chest is important to reduce signs of premature ageing, as these delicate areas are especially prone to dehydration.”

Eating well and drinking plenty of water is also important for achieving younger looking skin and an expert shared the best foods for this.

They explained Britons should include foods high in vitamin C, D and E in their diets. An expert said: “To replenish your supply [of vitamin D], eat plenty of vitamin-rich foods such as fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and leafy greens.

“Vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus fruits can also help to combat winter-induced dullness. And add a sprinkle of nuts, seeds, and oils — full of vitamin E — which protects against oxidative damage.

“These powerful antioxidants protect the skin from free radicals such as UV rays, pollution, and environmental aggressors, which damage cells and increase ageing. With the right diet, your skin will thrive as spring arrives, leaving you radiant as you approach the new season.”
