Britons told they are at risk in South American country that ‘does not meet European standards’

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a fresh travel update for Britons heading to Bolivia.

The advisory specifically highlighted concerns about bus transportation safety across the South American destination.

According to the FCDO, safety standards for bus services in Bolivia “vary greatly between providers”.

Holidaymakers were warned that “accidents involving public transport, especially long-distance buses, have affected British people”.

The FCDO explained that public transport options may fall short of what British tourists are used to.

For example, bus drivers in Bolivia often drive for longer periods than would be permitted under European regulations.

The FCDO added: “Many taxis and most bus companies do not meet European standards and rarely have seatbelts.”

This lack of basic safety features presents significant risks to travellers accustomed to stricter regulations.

Travellers have therefore been urged to prioritise safety when booking transportation in Bolivia.

“Some bus companies which cater specifically for the tourist market, although they may be more expensive, tend to have better safety standards, including seatbelts and better-trained drivers,” the advisory noted.

The FCDO also emphasised the importance of thorough research before travel.

The warning comes as part of broader travel guidance aimed at helping Britons make informed decisions when travelling through the country.

Beyond bus safety concerns, the FCDO also warned about crime risks when using public transport in Bolivia.

The advisory stated: “Petty crime is common in central La Paz, in other popular tourist destinations, on buses and in crowded areas.”

Travellers were advised never to leave their belongings unattended and keep their passports, money and other valuable items in a “safe place”.

For night bus journeys, holidaymakers were encouraged to wear a money belt under their clothes for important documents and credit cards, with Britons warned: “Theft can occur when you are asleep.”

Bolivia is known for its exceptional landscapes, stunning wildlife, welcoming locals, rich history and culture, and fantastic festivals.

However, before visiting the vibrant South American destination, Britons should ensure they consult the FCDO’s latest travel guidance.

This will include the most up-to-date information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks – including where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel – health and getting help.

Holidaymakers should always read the travel guidance for their chosen destination before going abroad to ensure a safe, well-informed trip.

Britons were recently warned that unrest in Africa can turn “violent” and deadly as curfews are imposed.
