Star’s property in countryside town ‘renowned for its spectacular coastline’

Olivia Colman has become one of the most memorable faces in the British film industry, garnering praise for her portrayals of the Queen in The Favourite and The Crown.

The actress previously lived in Peckham with her husband Ed Sinclair, but the pair eventually sold their home in 2021 to return to Colman’s birthplace, Norfolk.

Olivia had spoken fondly of Peckham’s sense of community while living in the area, telling British Vogue in 2019: “These streets are a lovely community – they really look after you.”

She owned a five-bedroom house in the fashionable southeast London neighbourhood which reportedly cost the couple £885,000 but sold for £2.3million.

The start rise to stardom was no easy feat, however, and regular harassment from the paparazzi eventually led her to flee the city in search of a quieter life.

During an interview with Vogue in 2023, the actress opened up about her move to Norfolk, where she secured a Grade-II listed building with her husband.

“We’ve moved to the countryside, and it’s lovely,” she said. “It’s where I’m from. We never fell out of love with London. I love London, but it became difficult.”

The couple’s regal home at the heart of the countryside was reportedly secured for a staggering £1.3million.

Ed reportedly applied for planning permission soon after settling in the area, proposing plans for an outdoor swimming pool with walk-in steps and LED lighting, according to Hello!.

An extension was also requested for the property’s outbuilding, which “functions as a summer house and games room for the children”.

Glen Hammond, managing director of Norfolk-based Hammon and Stratford, says the county is famous for its natural beauty and tranquillity.

“Norfolk’s picturesque landscapes, coastal areas, and historic towns make it an attractive destination for people seeking a tranquil and scenic lifestyle, especially in the post-pandemic era when remote work and a desire for more specious living have become prevalent,” he explained.

“Additionally, Norfolk’s relatively lower property prices compared to London and the South East make it an affordable choice for those seeking a change in their living environment.”

Visit Norfolk recommends leisurely strolls around south Norfolk’s market towns, namely Diss, Harleston, Wymondham, and Attleborough.

“You’re sure to find a cosy little tea room and an antique shop,” the website explained. “And look out for ‘narrow’ or ‘street’ commons and greens, a reminder of the linear network of grazing verges that were used to sustain livestock on their way to the market way back when.”

The northern stretch of the county has become an oasis for local wildlife, which it attracts with acres of sweeping coastline.

“North Norfolk is renowned for its spectacular coastline, fantastic wildlife, miles of glorious beaches, seaside communities and a beautiful hinterland of rolling countryside and picturesque market towns and villages,” says Visit Norfolk.

“North Norfolk must be the birdwatching capital of the UK, and you can even take a boat trip to see our local seal colony at Blakeney Point.”
