Hair: Celebrity hairstylist shares which length is most prone to damage

There are several factors which influence the quality of your hair, from shampooing techniques to hair-boosting foods to strategic hairstyles.

According to one expert, your choice of haircut could also mean the difference between luscious and lacklustre locks.

Celebrity hairstylist and creative education director for Scruples, William Whatley, explained that longer cuts can cause more problems than short chops.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, William said: “Shorter hairstyles are always going to be better to create less breakage because you don’t have to manipulate the hair as much as if you have longer hair.

“You’re going to have to be more careful and gentler when you’re styling, brushing, washing, etc.”

Another hair expert offered a top tip for your next trip to the salon, revealing the number of weeks to leave between haircuts for “thicker, healthier hair” and no split ends.

Editorial Director at RUSH Hair, Tina Farey, told GB News: “I’ll say it once and I’ll probably keep saying it for the rest of my life – listen to your stylist when they tell you to get a trim.

“If your vision is long, thick, healthy hair then getting a regular trim will do you the world of good.”

William also offered his insights on the correct hair-brushing method. According to the expert, brushing from the root to the ends is a big no-no.

“A great tip for brushing or styling your hair is you want to start from the tip of your hair and work towards the root,” the hairstylist said, “so you don’t do any unnecessary pulling from the top of your head”.

“Then brush all the way down as it’s less damaging to start from the bottom of the hair strands, moving toward your scalp”.

Once the brushing is complete, the style you choose may make or break your hair.

Indeed, a second celebrity hairstylist told GB News that women should ditch two popular updo styles that cause breakage and damage.

You can also achieve better hair by making healthy food choices. William explained: “Your diet is one of the best ways to always keep your hair healthy.”

He emphasised the importance of enjoying a “clean” diet, eating less junk food and more vegetables and greens.

“I always recommend fish because of the essential fatty omegas from fish,” William advised, “and clean poultry and free-range fed beef are always good options. “Just keep your diet clean.”
