Ukrainians brace for things to get worse after Putin re-election
STORY: Putin won a record post-Soviet landslide in Russia’s election on Sunday (March 17), cementing his already tight grip on power in a victory he said showed Moscow had been right to stand up to the West and send its troops into Ukraine. While not surprised by Putin’s predictable win, most people in the streets of the capital say they expected the Russian president to escalate attacks on Ukraine.”We have to be on guard, especially the big cities where at present it is quiet but at any moment they (Russians) can start something big, start bombing, ” one resident said.”We should simply get ready for anything,” another one said.In his speech on Sunday, Putin raised the possibility of setting up a buffer zone on the border with Ukraine implying Russia may seek to annex more Ukrainian territory.”Putin’s goal is to destroy Ukraine completely,” one resident said urging the United States to approve the military aid for Ukraine.
