A man and a child were left with burns injuries after a Volvo burst into flames at the roadside in Wigan on Monday (July 15).

Police, paramedics and fire crews raced to the scene of the dramatic blaze on Atherton Road, in the Hindley area of Wigan, at around 12.30pm. A man and a child who were inside the vehicle at the time suffered injuries and were taken to hospital.

The car, a Volvo XC40 mild hybrid petrol, erupted into the flames at the roadside as horrified onlookers watched on. The cause of the blaze has not been confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that two passengers were taken to hospital with burns injuries in the incident, as the North West Ambulance Service said those injured were a man and a child.

In a statement to the Manchester Evening News, Volvo confirmed a vehicle was involved in a fire, that it has launched an investigation to determine the cause and that the family involved are being ‘offered support’.

A spokesperson for the car manufacturer said: “Volvo Car UK is aware of a vehicle fire that occurred on Monday 15 July, involving a Volvo XC40 mild hybrid petrol. The driver and passengers have sustained injuries which they are receiving treatment for.

“Safety is a top priority for Volvo Cars and we are taking this incident very seriously. We have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. Until this investigation is complete, we cannot comment any further. We have been in touch with the family involved to offer our support while the investigation is ongoing.”

At the time of the incident, a GMP spokesperson said: “Emergency services are responding to a vehicle fire on Atherton Road in Hindley this afternoon (Monday 15 July). A car caught fire and two victims have been taken to hospital with burns.”
