One Queensland resident appeared relatively unfazed by waist-deep water surrounding him during the recent historic flood, replying “Yeah, nah, it’s all good,” as local Good Samaritans assisting their stranded neighbors asked if they could help him.
Cooktown resident Gavin Dear told Storyful how he and a friend had set out into the debris-filled deluge after hearing about people stranded on roofs.
“As we launched the boat into the river, we heard cries for help and found two men in separate trees.” adding that one seemed “pretty shaken” after almost being crushed by a shipping container floating by.
Another local in a precarious situation, identified as Jonesy in the video, appeared to be more concerned about his neighbors. As muddy waist-high floodwater frothed behind him, he asked Dear if they had checked on a dog.
Later in the video, Dear can be heard calmly saying, “This is all bits of our house” as he recognizes debris in the water.
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper brought heavy rain, causing record-breaking flooding in far north Queensland on December 17 and 18. The flooding has been defined by a regional flood expert as the highest since records began, according to local media. Credit: Gavin Dear via Storyful
