Education systems differ around the world, and each country has varying access to school and university. 

New research has delved into which locations rank as the ‘smartest’, taking into account a range of factors including Nobel prize nominations, IQ and degrees.

Switzerland came out in first place, with an impressive score of 92.02 out of 100.

The mountainous European destination topped everywhere else and has 1,099 Nobel Prize nominations and an average IQ of 99.24 across its population. 

What’s more, 40.02 per cent of adults there hold at least a Bachelor’s degree, the highest rate of all the countries, and 18.05 per cent have the minimum of a Master’s degree.

The United Kingdom followed in second place and scored 89.4 overall in the research by World of Card Games.

It boasts 2,393 Nobel Prize nominations and comes just after Switzerland closely with 39.59 per cent of adults holding Bachelor’s degrees. 

Brits have an average IQ of 99.12 and 14.37 per cent of the population have at least a Master’s degree.

America placed third a score of 89.18, showing strong higher education attainment with 38.57 per cent of adults having a Bachelor’s degree and 14.79 per cent holding a Master’s.

A whopping 5,717 individials in the US have Nobel Prize nominations – the highest out of every country analysed. 

The States is also home to the most universities with Nobel Prize nominaitons – 256 – and the average IQ is 97.43.

The Netherlands followed in fourth place and scored 87.3 overall. It boasts an average IQ of 100.74 and 36.63 per cent are educated up to Bachelor’s level.

Belgium ranked fifth, rating 86.58 and averaging at 97.49 on the IQ score across its population. 

European destinations dominated the top 10 countries, accounting for nine including Sweden, Germany, Poland, Denmark and Finland.

Finland impressed with its IQ score, securing the highest out at 101.20.

America placed third , with a score of 89.18, showing strong higher education attainment with 38.57 per cent of adults having a Bachelor's degree and 14.79 per cent holding a Master's

Meanwhile, Poland has the highest Master’s degree attainment at 22.31 per cent overall.

Holger Sindbaek, founder of World of Card Games, commented: ‘These rankings show how countries build smart, capable citizens through long-term investment in education and research. 

‘The top performers focus on several areas at once, from world-class universities to making sure more people earn degrees.

‘Switzerland’s first-place finish shows how a small country can make a big impact by focusing on quality over size. The strong results from European countries show that when regions invest in education, the benefits spread widely.’
