Brushing your hair is something you likely do every day, but according to a hair enthusiast, your method could be doing you more harm than good.

Chelespell, who shares health and beauty hacks for women over 50, took to social media to tell ladies the correct technique for luscious locks.

The hair enthusiast said: “So you want longer, stronger hair? Before you think about hair products, shampoos and conditioners, there are some things you need to do first.

“Before spending money on expensive hair products, there’s a few things you need to know first – you could be damaging your own hair.”

‘Stop brushing your hair from the root down to the tips’

Learning to brush your locks properly can reduce the amount of breakages you see.

Chelespell continued: “I see it all the time: stop brushing your hair from the roots down to the tips.

“Start at the tips and get rid of the tangles, then work your way down.” Fixing any knotted strands first will work wonders for your hair.

Indeed, the experts at Garnier seconded this: “Do you brush your hair from root to tip? You’re already off to a bad start.

“Starting at the root and pulling hair down to the ends can pull strands out of the follicle, resulting in hair breakage.

“We recommend starting a few inches off the bottom and slowly working your way up the strand in small sections and short strokes to remove hair tangles.

“This technique is much more efficient at preventing unwanted damaged hair and breakage.”

Another tip Chelespell recommended was to ensure you are protecting your hair.

She said: “We all know we’re not supposed to be over bleaching our hair, over processing or using a lot of bleach products.

“But I’m going to tell you to go ahead: do the bleach, do the blow drying – you’re going to do it, I know I do.”
