As January’s health resolutions take hold, an expert has warned diets, such as intermittent fasting, could be damaging your hair health.

The popular dieting method, which sees people fast for set hours before eating during specific periods, has witnessed a 29 per cent surge in Google searches this January.

With over one million monthly searches, intermittent fasting’s rising popularity comes amid concerns about its impact on hair growth and follicle regeneration. But those following it run the risk of becoming deficient in key nutrients that can impact hair.

Hair expert at Milk & Blush Nicole Petty said: “Your locks are sensitive to what you eat and how you eat.

Recent studies have shown that intermittent fasting can reduce hair growth by slowing down follicle regeneration.

Nicole warned: “Extended fasting periods can sometimes cause nutrient deficiencies due to eating over a shorter period.”

The restricted eating windows can lead to inadequate consumption of vital nutrients like iron, zinc and biotin.

These deficiencies can weaken hair strands, resulting in breakage and thinning, as hair follicles require a consistent supply of nutrients to maintain healthy growth. Maintaining a well-balanced diet is crucial for healthy hair, according to the hair pro.

She stated: “Maintaining a well-balanced diet containing plenty of fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat and carbohydrates is the best way to keep your hair healthy.”

The expert emphasised that dietary changes can significantly impact hair health. This advice comes as many Britons embrace new eating patterns for their New Year’s resolutions.

Specific foods can help maintain strong, healthy hair growth. “For those that can, eating plenty of fish is a great way to consume healthy fats and oils like omegas 3s, 6s and 9s to boost hair growth,” the expert explained.

Eggs are highlighted as a crucial source of biotin, along with vitamins A and E. Spinach and sweet potato provide essential iron, vitamins A and C, and beta-carotene, promoting scalp circulation.

Berries offer rich antioxidants that protect hair follicles and boost collagen production. Beans can provide valuable protein and iron for hair health.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

For those committed to intermittent fasting, Nicole recommended focusing on nutrient-dense meals during eating windows.

She advised: “If you fast intermittently or intend to start, prioritise eating nutrient-dense meals that include iron-rich foods like spinach and lentils.”

Also, incorporate biotin-packed options like eggs and zinc-filled nuts and seeds. These dietary choices can help ensure proper nourishment for hair health, even within restricted eating schedules.
