For beautiful, luscious locks in mid-life and above, women might want to incorporate a new step into their hair care routine.

According to a hair enthusiast, a homemade, egg-based hair mask can work wonders. The experts at Batiste describe a hair mask as an “intense nourishing treatment to help strengthen, hydrate, de-frizz and restore dry, damaged, processed or curly hair to healthy bounce and shine”.

Lisa Monique (known as In the Garden with LM on YouTube) shared a top tip for achieving “healthy hair” over 50. She advised women to ensure that it’s well-conditioned.

She said: “My hair does not do well with a heavy deep conditioner. When I put a deep conditioner in my hair – because it’s not colour-treated or anything like that – it tends to coat my hair just a little too much and then it’s really flat for around two or three shampoos.

‘I have been doing an egg and coconut oil hair mask and it has really worked wonders’

“So I have been doing an egg and coconut oil hair mask and it has really worked wonders.

“You just take one egg – I take mine out during the day to make it room temperature – and then two tablespoons of coconut oil, whip it all together and apply it to your hair for about 30 minutes.

“Now what’s very important is that when you rinse it, you rinse it with cool water because you don’t want to cook the egg in your hair with hot water – definitely make sure you rinse it out with cool water.”

According to the beauty enthusiast, you will notice an “immediate difference” in the appearance of your hair.

Lisa said: “The egg white – besides stimulating your hair follicle, so hopefully increasing hair growth – also bonds to the protein in your hair – or so I’ve read.

“I do know that it makes my hair feel smoother and the cuticle, flatter. It’s supposed to bond with the proteins in your hair and make it stronger.

“The coconut oil contains caprylic acid, which also stimulates hair growth and protects it from breakage and dryness.”

St Botanica, which sells premium hair care products, detailed the benefits of applying egg to your hair.

The experts said: “Eggs are great for your hair and scalp. They are nutrient-rich. Eggs are enriched with the goodness of vitamins A, biotin, vitamin E and folate – all of which help to make hair thick and healthy. Using an egg mask is the best way to nourish and repair hair damage.”

There are several benefits of incorporating eggs into your hair care routine, such as promoting hair growth, fighting hair loss, improving hair elasticity, adding shine, repairing damage and enhancing texture.
