The excitement of a fun sports day fell a little flat during a cruise off the coast of Tasmania recently, as passengers looked on bemused when some crew members emerged wearing masks and pointed white hats. The awkward moment was recorded aboard a P&O Christmas cruise on December 26 by passenger Terri Rawling, who told Storyful that, “All departments came out in their uniforms and housekeeping came out dressed as … well, we all see…”In the video, the housekeeping staff can be seen parading by in their bizarre costumes, ready to compete in a crew sports day.A P&O Australia spokesperson told the Daily Mail Australia the staff were dressed as “upside-down snow cones”, and not intending to look like the Ku Klux Klan.“I don’t know what happened,” Rawling can be heard saying in the video, as a fellow passenger looks on.“There was a lot of excitement then it all went quiet… the lack of judgement was astounding,” Rawling told the Mail. “A lady sitting in front of me, her jaw dropped. She was like, ‘What the hell?’ Everyone was like OMG, they were calling it the ‘KKK cruise’.”Rawling told Storyful that a senior crew member soon told the staff to remove their hats.
