As the first day of 2025 approaches, many stores will be operating reduced hours on the first bank holiday of the year.

Tesco
Tesco stores will be operating on New Year’s Day from 8am to 6pm.
Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s stores will open for 12-hour periods, with some operating between 8am and 8pm and others between 9am and 9pm. Customers are advised to check the opening hours of their local Sainsbury’s outlet online.

Morrisons’ stores will be open with reduced hours from 9am to 6pm.
Lidl
Lidl shops outside of the M25 will be closed across the UK on New Year’s Day. Stores inside the M25 will remain open from 10am to 6pm.
Asda
Customers are advised to check their store locator for information on their specific store but most will be open from 9am to 6pm.
Argos
Argos stores will be open from 9am to 8pm with stores inside Sainsbury’s operating at the supermarket’s opening hours.
Next
Next stores will open for eight hours on New Year’s Day, from 10am to 6pm.
Ikea
Ikea shops will be open from 10am to 6pm just as New Year’s Eve.
Matalan
A number of stores will be closed on New Year’s Day and customers are advised to check Matalan’s official website for details on specific stores. The remaining stores that are open will be operating from 10am to 4pm with the exception of:

- Colindale – 10am – 6pm
- Cricklewood – 10am – 6pm

- Staines – 10.30am – 4.30pm

Primark
Primark told GB News: “The majority of our stores in Great Britain will be open between 9am and 7pm on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, but as this really varies by store, we advise shoppers to check their local Primark store times on our website before visiting to avoid disappointment. Customers can check the opening hours for their local store here.”
Closed stores
All Aldi stores will be closed across the UK and will reopen on January 2, resuming their normal business hours.
Waitrose and Marks & Spencer stores will also be shut on New Year’s Day.
