A DJ has been jailed after urinating on a cancer patient at a social club and posting the video online.
Leigh Brookfield pleaded guilty to common assault following the incident at Llanelli tennis club in Wales.
The court heard that the 40-year-old was standing next to Peter Barton – who has cancer – in the toilets when he filmed himself performing the stunt.
It was while Barton was telling Brookfield that he was going undergoing treatment for prostate cancer that the DJ turned and urinated on his back.
The video was posted on Snapchat on Boxing Day in 2023, and the victim was unaware of what had happened until he saw the footage.
After the assault, Brookfield said on social media: “It’s just something me and the boys do when we are drunk”.
In mitigation, the court heard Brookfield was “appalled by himself” and that he wished to apologise to the victim.
Prosecutor Lucy Mansfield previously told the court last December: “This occurred on Boxing Day this year at the Llanelli Tennis and Squash Club within the toilets.
“The defendant entered the toilets and has spoken to the complainant and the complainant explained that he has recently received a prostate cancer diagnosis.
“Whilst this was happening the defendant proceeded to urinate on the complainant and while this was occurring video was posted online.”
Brookfield’s defence team asked for a pre-sentence report to be carried out to address his alcohol use.
Lawyer Steven John said: “This was obviously committed in drink and there’s a history of alcohol-related offending”.
Llanelli Tennis and Squash Club said it had banned Brookfield for life and described Barton as a “valued member of our club”.
Llanelli Tennis and Squash Club said in a statement: “(Peter) was understandably upset about this incident as he has recently had treatment for cancer.
“We are a family friendly club and are devastated that our name has been bought into this despicable act by a person who has no association with the club and through no fault of our own. Leigh Brookfield has been banned from the club for life for his vile actions”.
Brookfield was sentenced to 14 weeks’ imprisonment at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
He was also ordered to pay £500 compensation, costs of £85 and a £154 surcharge.
