The Gaza debacle in the Commons should not prompt the resignation of the speaker, according to Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey.
He spoke to GB News’s Christopher Hope after he prompted fury with his decisions on the SNP’s opposition day debate, where its motion called for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.
Amendments from both the UK Government and Labour were called, meaning there was not a final vote on the unamended SNP motion.
The SNP believes Sir Lindsay broke with precedent and bowed to pressure from Labour, sparing Sir Keir Starmer from a vote which would have exposed divisions in his party.
Davey says that while the SNP may no longer be appreciative of the Speaker, the Liberal Democrats continue to have “full support” for him.
“He was in a very difficult position, to make sure all views were heard he approached that with a degree of gravity”, he said.
“It was a difficult position, but we should respect him.”
