A headteacher has defended his school’s introduction of Saturday detentions, saying the strict approach has “captured the mood of the nation.”

Alun Ebenezer of Caldicot School told GB News that the “overwhelming majority of people” have supported the measure over the past 24 hours.

“We are fed up of being soft,” Ebenezer said.

The headteacher insisted that while these measures might appear controversial, they have “ignited something” with people saying “this is what we need.”

The school’s first Saturday detention saw 11 out of 15 students attend, with those present working hard and displaying good manners.

Three students who missed the detention had valid reasons and will have their sessions rearranged, Ebenezer explained.

One student who simply refused to attend was excluded from school.

“I think they can see there has to be a consequence and that’s what we’ve instilled at Caldicot,” the headteacher said.

Ebenezer emphasised that schools must stop “mollycoddling” children, as institutions increasingly find themselves addressing family-related challenges.

“For too long, schools are mopping up and doing things the family should do,” he said.

The headteacher stressed that educational institutions are having to step in where families are struggling.

Ebenezer highlighted the crucial role of family involvement in education.”

The family are critical,” he told GB News.

“The more the family are involved, the better the young person does,” he explained.

The Caldicot School head emphasised his commitment to working alongside families and the local community.

“We want to work with our family and community at Caldicot because that is where the battle is won and lost,” he said.
