“Hooves on the ground, propellers in the sky” – that’s how one officer described Police Scotland’s approach to dealing with public order.

After unrest in other parts of the UK over the summer, the spotlight has been on how to tackle protests and disorder.

The force says their ​approach is changing rapidly – with a combination of drones and horses now likely to be more useful in a riot situation than shields and batons.

The were given exclusive access to the training of Police Scotland’s mounted unit – meeting some experienced horses, as well as some newbies who are just learning the ropes.
