The authority said the car parks impacted would be The Forge in Stockton Heath and car parks on Pepper Street, Davies Way and Henry Street in Lymm.

In Lymm, a 70p fee for one hour’s parking would be introduced.

In Stockton Heath, standard parking charges would be in place until 17:00 with a new evening rate introduced.

Council leader Hans Mundry said: “While we are proposing to remove free parking periods in Stockton Heath and Lymm – as part of our work to make savings across the board – we are committed to keeping the new charges to the absolute minimum.

“These proposals reflect the difficult choices necessary if we want to achieve the savings we need to protect frontline services.

“However, even with these changes, parking costs in Stockton Heath and Lymm would remain lower than many of our neighbouring local authorities.”

Nearby authority Cheshire East Council removed free parking at some of its car parks last year.
