Wallis Simpson was a victim of a vicious smear campaign as she grew close to the former Prince of Wales.

The royal couple caused controversy when Edward VIII abdicated the throne to his brother George to marry two-time American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

Wallis was largely vilified and painted as the cause of the King’s downfall after he announced his abdication via a radio broadcast in 1936.

In a new book titled Her Lotus Year: China, the Roaring Twenties and the Making of Wallis Simpson, a China-based author, Paul French, found that defamatory rumours stemmed from true events in China in the 1920’s but had no link to Wallis.

Wallis was a victim of one of the most effective establishment whispering campaigns ever mounted, according to French.

The accusations linked to Wallis stemmed from a document, called the China Dossier, were true stories that were falsely attached to Wallis.

French also confirms that, although the China Dossier was referenced in the letters and diaries of London’s socialites and courtiers, there is no evidence that anyone ever actually saw it or that the document ever physically existed.

In his book, released on November 12 this year, French accuses a British Secret Intelligence Service officer based in China as the source of the rumours.

French said: “They just wanted to scupper this relationship somehow.”

“If her husband had been stationed in Portsmouth, I don’t think we’d be talking about the Portsmouth Dossier.”

Wallis, who later married the late Queen’s uncle, Edward, spent a year in China with her first husband in 1924 and revisited the country after they split, fuelling more rumours.

The then Prince of Wales, heir to the British throne, was discouraged by the establishment from pursuing a relationship with the American divorcee.

The new book includes rumours that she had numerous affairs…posed for pornographic pictures, and worked for gangsters.

Princess Kate, Meghan Markle, and Sarah Ferguson all faced criticism when they married into the Royal Family.

Alexander Larman, when he spoke to GB News, compared Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to the ” modern-day version” of the controversial royal couple.

After Edward VIII abdication, King George ruled for almost 16 years before Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne in 1952.
