A van driver has been banned from driving after he was caught behind the wheel with a frozen windscreen.

David Hyslop, 54, was told to stay off the roads for a year after being stopped on the A701 in Dumfries, Scotland, in December 2022.

He was charged with road traffic offences and was later convicted of dangerous driving last week following a trial at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

Hyslop was also handed a £500 fine, alongside his 12-month prohibition.

Police Scotland released images of the icy blue van following his conviction, as a warning to drivers to not drive if their vehicles are frosted over.

Inspector Gavin McHallum said: “As we move into the winter months and a drop in temperatures, I hope this case acts as a reminder of the importance of ensuring your vehicle is in a safe condition to be driven on our roads.

“It is absolutely vital that there is no snow or ice on your windows before you set off so please take the time to properly clear your vehicle.

“If you cannot see clearly you are putting yourself and others on the road at risk.”

The images of the van, which were published on Facebook, prompted one user to call it a “complete madness”.

Another said: “It’s a but silly on his behalf with a hefty forfeit, for an extra 2 mins of his time clearing his windscreen.”

While a second said he should have got out of bed earlier to clean the frost off.

Frost can be expected across the UK, as a cold snap is expected to hit this week, bringing sub-zero temperatures across the country.

The Met Office said there may be hill snow on Thursday in Scotland and Wales.

A Met Office forecaster said: “It will stay cold, with frost overnight and brighter skies on Tuesday and Wednesday before rain and some hill snow are likely to spread across parts of England and Wales during Thursday.

“This could be heavy and prolonged in places.

“Further north has wintry showers on Thursday and Friday.

“Over the weekend and into next week, cold conditions and northerly winds are expected, with showers bringing rain, sleet and snow, most frequent on coasts in the north and east.”
