US migrant crisis passes horror milestone as southern border sees highest single-day total ever

At least 12,600 migrant encounters have taken place in just 24 hours at the southern border in the US – the highest single-day total ever recorded.

It comes after US chiefs temporarily suspended the operation of international railway crossing bridges following a huge surge in illegal crossings.

The latest figures include 11,000 border apprehensions alongside 1,600 migrants encountered at official points of entry, it has been reported.

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced that bridges in Eagle Pass and El Paso, Texas shut down on Monday.

Pedestrian and crossings used by vehicles in Eagle Pass, Texas; Lukeville, Arizona; and San Ysidro, California have previously been closed by the Biden administration over recent weeks.

Last month the US-Mexico border saw 130,000 attempts to illegally cross in the first 17 days of the month and there have been 167,000 attempts so far in December, according to NewsNation.

The mass rise in the number of migrants is being driven by misinformation by criminal organisations and cartels, the CBP has said.

A spokesperson said: “After observing a recent resurgence of smuggling organisations moving migrants through Mexico via freight trains, CBP is taking additional actions to surge personnel and address this concerning development, including in partnership with Mexican authorities.”

Challenging president Joe Biden, Texas Governor Greg Abbott enacted sweeping powers to deal with the migrant crisis on Monday.

The laws will enable police to arrest illegal migrants and allow judges to boot them back across the Mexico border.

Abbott has accused the White House of doing “nothing to halt illegal immigration.”

He said: “Joe Biden’s deliberate inaction has decimated America.

“The consequences of [the new law] are so extreme that the people being smuggled by the cartels, they will not want to be coming into the state of Texas.”

Last month, a new report suggested Joe Biden’s mismanaged migrant crisis is costing US taxpayers an eye-watering $451billion a year.

The report, compiled by the Republican party on Monday, suggests nearly half a trillion dollars is being funnelled into paying for the crisis, including for healthcare and accommodation.
