Travellers nationwide can soon expect the complete removal of the 100ml rule at airport security as the Government rolls out new technology.

Britons have been warned that while their departing airports may accept liquid limits over 100ml, this may not be the case for other hubs through which travellers are transferred.

Enquiring about new security rules will be essential to avoid losing personal items at security gates, according to experts.

The end of the 100ml liquid rules for plane passengers could see passengers departing the UK with up to two litres of liquids in their hand luggage.

Discrepancies in airport policies across Europe could see security staff confiscate items above the 100ml limit during layovers, however.

This could affect Britons who are required to go through security during their extended layovers or transfers.

Matthew Hall, Managing Director for the airport transfer app Hoppa, explained that this is due to other countries introducing the new rules at a later date.

He said: “Once fully in place, the new rules will make it easier and more convenient for passengers to bring larger tech devices, toiletries and liquid gifts through the security control.

“You will need to check which rules apply at your departure and destination airports through.”

The Government announced in December 2022 that it would roll out new screening equipment at airports by June 2024, which would see the 100ml limit on liquids scrapped.

“While the UK Government has set that June 2024 target, other countries operate according to their own timelines.

“If you depart from an airport with the new scanners and have to go through security again at your connecting airport, or when you return, you could find that some of your items are confiscated if that airport still has the 100ml rule in place.

“For now, it’s smarter to still pack your hand luggage with the 10 ml rule in mind for check with your airline or the airport in advance, to avoid losing personal items at the security gate.”

The change in rules represents one of the most prominent updates in recent aviation history.

To date, London City Airport (LCY) and Teeside are the only two that have fully implemented new screening equipment, lifting the 100 ml rule.

With the deadline for the project fast approaching, hubs like Heathrow and Gatwick are expected to lift the scrap limit on liquids soon.
