A teenage girl has died of a blood clot less than three weeks after starting the contraceptive pill.

Layla Khan, 16, from Immingham, Lincolnshire, began taking the pill in order to ease her period pain, however within weeks, a blood clot formed on her brain and she died.

The “beautiful and intelligent” girl collapsed on her bathroom floor after she complained of agonising pain.

Her family took her to a hospital in Grimsby, where a scan found the clot on her brain.

She was then taken to Hull Royal Infirmary, where she underwent an operation. Her family was informed that she might not survive the procedure.

The 16-year-old sadly passed away on December 13.

Her friends recommended the pill to her to help her cope with painful stomach cramps, and she began taking the tablets on November 25.

By December 5, she started developing headaches and a few days later, she was violently vomiting.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Khan’s family contacted the 111 NHS helpline for guidance yet were told there we “no red flags”.

Layla’s aunt Jenna Braithwaite said: “On the Sunday night, she was being sick, a lot.

“She was basically vomiting every 30 minutes. So we got a GP appointment on the Monday morning.

“Even though she was being sick the whole time she was at the GP’s, they gave her anti-sickness tablets and told her that they thought it was a stomach bug.

“They said there was no red flags, and to go to the hospital on Wednesday if it continued.”

However, by December 11, Khan was screaming out in pain and collapsed whilst at home. She was pronounced brain dead two days later, leaving her family and friends heartbroken.

Braithwaite, said: “Words can’t even, we can’t even say the words about how devastated our family are, we’ve only just recently lost my Nana. With it being so close to Christmas as well, it’s a time for celebration and it sucks all the Christmas spirit out of you.”

The bright young girl was viewed as a potential Oxford student by her lecturers, her family said

She added: “The fact that they said there were no red flags and then a day later she’s brain dead, it’s incomprehensible. It’s just such a shock. The family’s absolutely devastated.”

The bright young girl was viewed as a potential Oxford student by her lecturers, her family said.

The 16-year-old’s organs will be donated to those needing life-saving surgeries, as per her family’s wishes.

The Khans were told that Layla’s organs have helped save five lives already in the run-up to Christmas.

Braithwaite’s daughter, Alicia Binns, has set up a GoFundMe campaign to try and raise money for Layla’s family.

Launching the campaign, Alicia wrote: “She was only 16 years old when her life was unexpectedly taken. She was beautiful and intelligent, loved and cherished by so many people, and had her whole life ahead of her.

“The family is absolutely devastated, and we would like to help raise as much as possible to help with funeral costs to give Layla the best send-off possible, like she deserves. She was the oldest child and princess of the family, and she deserves the best because she was the best. Along with helping the family at this difficult time, especially this close to Christmas, every little helps.”

The page has already raised over £7,000.
