The UK’s biggest airport has unveiled a huge overhaul of Terminal 4 as part of a £1.3billion investment next year.

London Heathrow plans to spend the whopping amount on improving various parts of the hub as part of its five-year investment programme, H7.

T4 will receive a major revamp, with construction planned to start next year in phases to ensure operations continue as normal.

It will include a brand new multi-storey car park as well as an upgraded check-in area, and the work is expected to be finished in 2031.

Terminal Two is also set to receive a new dedicated baggage system next year.

Some 31,000 bags per day will be handled by the new system, and will help improve efficiencies and service for passengers.

A new assistance area will also be built in the terminal, giving passengers direct access to security, and all assistance areas across Heathrow will be upgraded.

The investment will also cover the installation of cameras across the airport’s stands that will use AI to speed up the processes between flights.

The hub plans to have the technology put out across the airport by the end of next year.

A new Tailored Travel Guide will allow travellers who have access needs to put their details into the system, which is the furst of its kind for a UK airport.

They will then be given a  personalised step-by-step guide to navigate the hub.

Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said: ‘Passengers should expect that every time they travel through Heathrow their journey is better than the last.

‘Last December, we said we’d invest in operational performance and this year we’re the most punctual hub in Europe.

‘Almost 99% of bags travelled on expected flights and 97% of security queue times were below 5 minutes, and in January, all passengers in all four terminals will benefit from going through new next generation security.

‘I’m excited to unveil next year’s programme which will make Heathrow more user-friendly, more efficient and more resilient for our customers.

‘This investment will flow directly into our nationwide supply chain helping to drive economic growth whilst we make Heathrow even better and more efficient for our customers.’

It comes as Heathrow Airport’s third runway has been fast-tracked in the Government’s £29billion makeover – meaning it could be unveiled sooner than expected.

Flights could take off from a new runway by 2035.

The new runway will open up at least 30 new daily routes and serve up to 150 million passengers, Heathrow said.

This could include dozens of routes to new destinations – including new direct flights to Peru, Indonesia, Argentina and the Philippines.
