With picturesque coasts, historic architecture, and serene countryside views, there are many reasons to opt for a break on home soil rather than jetting abroad.

Aside from reduced costs in many cases, picking a UK-based break also means you’ll get to explore the nooks and crannies of the country – some of which often go ignored.

You won’t need to forgo beauty, either, as many European hotspots have equally stunning UK counterparts.

More than a third of Brits believe staycations are easier than trips overseas, Sykes Holiday Cottages’ latest Staycation Index report reveals.

Reduced stress and cost savings are among the top reasons for choosing a UK break.

With this in mind, some of the top destination dupes to explore have been shared by Sykes.

From Norfolk’s lavender fields that rival Provence, France, to the ‘Mykonos of the UK, there’s something for everyone.

Swap Provence for Norfolk

The lavender fields of Norfolk are comparable to those you can discover in Provence

Provence, in the south of France, is known for its lavender fields, chocolate box towns and excellent gastronomy – but it’s not exactly a budget destination.

Closer to home, Norfolk offers many similar experiences.

Hunstanton’s sandy beach and iconic chalk cliffs are appealing – and visitors can also wander the fragrant Norfolk lavender fields, much like those found in Provence.

You can also visit grand Sandringham or explore quaint villages, costal paths and artisan shops.

Ditch Lake Bled for Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park offer unparalleled views

Lake Bled has been on the up with tourists, with many holidaymakers flocking to the Slovenian region to admire the views and natural scenery.

But in Scotland, you might find something similar.

The impressive views of Loch Lomond are reminiscent of Lake Bled, and there are also plenty of hikes available in the area.

Loch Lomond’s shores also offer boating, fishing and cruise opportunities.

Trade Mykonos for St Ives

St Ives in Cornwall is a favourite among many Brits, with beautiful beaches

Cornwall’s St Ives harbour has many properties with whitewashed walls and minimalist décor, reminiscent of Mykonos in Greece.

And with Porthmeor Beach’s golden sands nearby, guests can explore the picturesque region.

You can also, as in Mykonos, savour fresh seafood at restaurants along the harbour, or wander coastal paths to coves and fishing villages.

Bye bye Bruges, hello Edinburgh

Edinburgh has much to write home about, including its perfect skyline

If you’re looking for a historic walkable town, you might be contemplating a trip to Bruges in Belgium – but why not try Edinburgh?

Both boast magnificent architecture and much historic sightseeing, too.

Plus, you can sample delicious food and stroll around the city’s various bars and restaurants on a weekend getaway to Edinburgh.

Dump Venice for Cambridge

Punting on the River Cam in Cambridge is a popular pastime among locals and tourists

Punting on the River Cam in Cambridge is a popular pastime among locals and tourists

Waterways? Tick. Pretty cobbled streets? Tick. Beautiful houses and architecture? Tick.

While Venice is a much-loved tourist destination, a trip to Cambridge could provide just as much in the way of good food, boat trips and more.

In the historic town of Cambridge, guests can try their hand at river punting as though they were traversing the canals of Venice.

Holidaymakers can also visit Newmarket’s racecourses, cycle riverside paths, or wander the nearby woodlands.
