Tory MP Mark Francois addressed the recent rise in support for Reform UK by saying to voters: “If they don’t want a Labour government under the pro-EU Keir Starmer, they should vote Conservative when we get to the General Election.

“I think one of the reasons that polling number has occurred is that we haven’t yet come up with legislation to comprehensively address the boats in the channel.”

Mark Francois then went on to set out what he thinks the next steps should be: “I was out canvassing on Saturday. I got a lot of feedback from my constituents on that.

“We need to come up with this legislation. We need to do it quickly and it must include what’s called a notwithstanding clause, which basically means in layman’s English, we say to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg ‘thank you for your advice, but this is none of your business’.”

When asked about record-high levels of legal net migration, the Member of Parliament for Rayleigh and Wickford highlighted that: “The Prime Minister has said repeatedly he wants to see that come down.

“I think we all do. So I’m hoping that when we get the legislation, we’ll be getting some proposals on that too.”

And when asked about Nigel Farage’s I’m A Celeb adventure, Mark Francois have a direct response: I’ve no idea who’s going to win I’m A Celeb.”
