The Swiss ski resort that fell victim to a deadly fire on New Year’s Eve is being lined up to host events at the 2038 Winter Olympics.
Less than a fortnight after the blaze in Crans-Montana that killed 40, officials for the bid identified the municipality as a key site in their proposals.
Their plan is for Crans-Montana to stage the Alpine ski races – an eventuality that will almost certainly come to pass as Switzerland are the only candidate in the running for 2038 Games.
A detailed outline for the Olympics has been issued in close proximity to the tragedy within the popular Alpine resort.
In addition to the fatalities, 116 people were left injured after a fire at Le Constellation, which is alleged to have started in the basement when sparklers came into contact with soundproofing foam installed on the ceiling.
The bar’s owner and his wife are facing a number of potential charges, including ‘manslaughter by negligence’.

Crans-Montana will also host the world championships in Alpine skiing next year, as well as World Cup races at the end of this month, ahead of February’s Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.
The resort was previously identified as an Olympic host when Sion was competing to get the 2026 edition eventually won by Italy.
