The scheme, known as Stockport 8, also plans to reintroduce historical street patterns and names through its design, running by the town’s Grade-II listed viaduct.
Those behind the plan said it fits into wider proposals for 4,000 new home across Stockport and comes after months of consultation.
Eamonn Boylan, interim chair at Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, said the plan was “not just a step, but a leap forward” towards this goal.
Mr Stockton said the scheme will see homes built “for people at every stage of life and green open spaces for people to enjoy”, in a “benchmark for town centre living”.
The plans will be considered by the council’s planning committee in due course.
