State pensioners are set to receive a £150 boost to help with rising energy costs this winter after cuts to the Winter Fuel Payment.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is rolling out its Warm Home Discount scheme, which will run from October until March.

Eligible households will benefit from an automatic reduction on their electricity bills.

Customers of major energy suppliers, including British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON, and Octopus Energy, are among those who may qualify for the scheme.

Letters informing eligible households about the discount should have started arriving this month.

The £150 reduction will be applied directly to electricity bills, rather than being issued as a separate payment.

Eligibility for the Warm Home Discount includes pensioners who receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.

Age UK clarified: “If you receive Pension Credit or you’re on a low income with high energy costs, you might be entitled to a £150 reduction on your electricity bill through the Warm Home Discount scheme.”

Other qualifying benefits include the Savings Credit portion of Pension Credit, Universal Credit, and Housing Benefit. Some recipients of Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit may also be eligible.

However, living in a more energy-efficient property could affect eligibility, except for those receiving the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit.

The timing of the discount application may vary among energy suppliers, occurring anytime up until March 2024. This flexibility allows providers to manage the distribution of the discount effectively throughout the winter months.

Eligible households who haven’t received a letter by mid-January and believe they qualify should contact the Warm Home Discount helpline. The deadline for this winter’s scheme will be announced later in the year.

It’s important to note that the discount is not a cash payment. Instead, it is applied directly to electricity bills during the period from October to March. This approach ensures that the financial support is directly linked to energy costs during the colder months.

The scheme aims to provide crucial support to vulnerable households, particularly pensioners, as they face potentially high energy bills during the winter season.

The Warm Home Discount scheme provides vital support for eligible households during the colder months. However, it’s crucial for recipients to be aware of the process and deadlines.

As energy costs continue to be a concern for many, particularly pensioners, this automatic £150 reduction offers a welcome relief.

It underscores the Government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable households through the challenging winter period.
