Sharon Stone has criticized “ignorant” and “uneducated” Americans in a public swipe at Donald Trump.
The actress, 66, lashed out at people in the US who have an “extraordinary naïveté” when it comes to electing the government after Trump became president again earlier this month.
The Basic Instinct star, who was a vocal supporter of 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, took aim at American politics at the Torino Film Festival in Italy.
During a panel discussion, Stone was asked her thoughts on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
She said it was a “big” question to think about, adding: “We have to stop and think about who we choose for government.
“And if, in fact, we are actually choosing our government or if the government is choosing itself.”
Stone went on: “You know, Italy has seen fascism. Italy has seen these things, you guys. And you understand what happens. You have seen this before.
“My country is in the midst of adolescence. Adolescence is very arrogant. Adolescence thinks it knows everything. Adolescence is naive and ignorant and arrogant. And we are in our ignorant, arrogant adolescence.
“So, Americans who don’t travel, who 80 per cent don’t have a passport, who are uneducated, are in their extraordinary naïveté.
“What I would say is that the only way that we can help with these issues is to help each other.”
Stone, who picked up the Stella della Mole lifetime achievement award, also dismissed the notion that only “women should help women, because that’s the only way we have survived so far”.
The Total Recall actress said: “We must say that good men must help good men, and those good men must be very aware that a lot of their friends are not good men.
“We can’t continue to pretend that your friends are good men when they’re not good men. And you must be very clear minded and understand that your friends who are not good men are dangerous, violent men.
“And you have to keep them away from your daughters, your wives and your girlfriends, because this is the time when we can no longer look away, when bad men are bad.”
She then recalled seeing a comedian who said onstage that it was “brave” for a woman to accept going to dinner with him because “the number one killer in the world today is men. For men, the number one killer is heart disease”.
Stone stressed: “The number one killer for women is men. It is very important to remember that. It’s very important to remember that.”
More than one in three women (35.6 per cent) in the US have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime, according to the National Domestic Violence hotline.
In July, Stone revealed she would think about moving to Europe if Trump won the election.
Trump’s election triumph led to an outpouring of horror from liberal American voters, as well as global concern over what his presidency will mean for climate change, women’s reproductive rights, and geo-political security.
“I am certainly considering a house in Italy,” she told MailOnline.
“I think that’s an intelligent construct at this time. This is one of the first times in my life that I’ve actually seen anyone running for office on a platform of hate and oppression.”
