A serious safety alert has been issued for a serum after tests revealed dangerous levels of a prohibited chemical substance.

Makari De Suisse Dark Spot Corrector Serum, has been withdrawn from the market was found to contain significant amounts of clobetasol propionate, a substance banned in cosmetic products.

The cosmetic product, is designed Makari De Suisse, based in Paris, France, to reduce dark spots.

Trading Standards authorities have taken immediate action to remove the product from sale due to the serious health risks it poses to consumers.

The cosmetic product is designed Makari De Suisse

OPSS

The Office for Product Safety & Standards cautioned: “The product presents a serious chemical risk as following analysis the cream was found to contain up to 19.0mg/kg clobetasol propionate.

“Clobetasol propionate is prohibited in cosmetic products as exposure to it could cause skin irritation and may damage the endocrine system.”

The product fails to meet the requirements set out in both the European Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 and the UK’s Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013.

Consumers can identify the affected product as Makari De Suisse Active Intense Unify & Illuminate Dark Spot Corrector Serum, which comes in a burgundy bottle with a gold pump and matching cardboard packaging.

The specific batch number affected is 1303, and the product carries the barcode 098864008454. The country of origin for the product is currently unknown, according to Trading Standards officials.

Authorities confirm the product has been completely withdrawn from the market to protect public safety.

Consumers who have purchased this product are advised to stop using it immediately due to the serious health risks involved.

The recall comes soon after Makari De Suisse withdrew three additional cosmetic products from the market which were also deemed unsafe.

The products, namely the Glow Revitalizing Body Lotion, Active Intense Unify & Illuminate Argan & Carrot Oil Tone Boosting Cream, and Active Intense Tone Boosting Cream were recalled for failing to meet the requirements of the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013.

The products, which were available for Britons to buy online, were removed for the same reasons of potentially causing skin irritation and damage to the endocrine system.

The Makari De Suisse Glow Revitalizing Body Lotion was withdrawn from the market due to the product containing 3.1% w/w hydroquinone, which is banned from use in cosmetics.

The OPSS wrote: “Hydroquinone is a skin sensitiser and may cause allergic contact dermatitis. The product does not meet the requirements.”
