A savvy Brit flew to Italy for pasta because it worked out cheaper than a day trip to London.

James Moody, 30, jetted off with Ryanair from Stansted to Bergamo, located near Milan.

The last-minute flight cost just £30 and the thrifty holidaymaker booked it just 12 hours before the departure time.

James had to drive from Scunthorpe, where he lives, to the airport in time for the 6.30am departure.

He landed in Italy with enough time do some sightseeing, grab a coffee and tuck in to some authentic pasta – all for much less than what he would spend on a day out in London.

James returned back to the UK by 8.05pm that same evening and said: ‘It makes no sense how a jet is cheaper than a train.

‘The return flight to Italy cost £30 and you couldn’t get a train ticket to London for that. It’s at least £100 for a train from Scunthorpe to London.’

He described the price difference as ‘baffling’ and explained his exact expenditure for the day.

Once James arrived in Bergamo, he hopped on a shuttle bus to Milan city centre, which was a 50 minute journey costing £8.

The tourist paid £14 for a coffee and a cake and even managed to squeeze in some souvenir shopping. His pasta dinner cost £15.

James recalled: ‘It involved no sleep, driving to the airport and on the plane.

‘It was quick border control, and out of the airport where we were on a bus to the centre in minutes.

‘We headed from central station to the Starbucks reserve, one of only a couple out there.

‘There were massive queues, but it was well worth it with a range of coffee beans and options.’

Despite spending £50 on airport parking and £30 in petrol, James still insists it was a better deal than spending a day in London.

James continued: ‘We used the metro which you could tap in and out of throughout the day, headed to the San Siro for a photo outside and then the middle finger statue.’

He revealed he had pasta at a ‘TikTok famous location’ which he felt was ‘well worth’ queuing for.

James added: ‘I bought three Italian rubber ducks for a friend who collects them, they were £13 each and I got a bottle of limoncello for my mum.

‘I just love doing day trips and scouting out cheap flights with good times.

‘It’s so worth it to see different parts of the world and it doesn’t cost a fortune.’
