Nickel exposure can lead to a range of serious health concerns, according to official guidance.

The highly allergenic metal can cause severe skin irritation, accompanied by itching, redness and swelling. Affected individuals may also experience allergic reactions and respiratory problems.

These health risks are particularly concerning given the nature of body jewellery, which maintains prolonged contact with the skin.

The Mayo Clinic notes: “An allergic reaction (contact dermatitis) usually begins within hours to days after exposure to nickel.

“The reaction may last as long as two to four weeks. The reaction tends to occur only where your skin came into contact with nickel, but sometimes may appear in other places on your body.”

In severe cases, extended exposure may lead to perforation of the nasal septum.

Acute ingestion of nickel compounds presents additional health risks, with symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

No other product in the range has been affected by the recall

GETTY

Customers who have purchased the affected belly bars are advised to return them to any Sainsbury’s store for a full refund.

For additional information, consumers can contact Beeline’s consumer services team via email at product.safety@beeline-group.com.

The company emphasised that this recall is specific to the Belly bar product, with no other Beeline items affected by the safety concern.

Government data reveals that prolonged nickel exposure can cause serious respiratory conditions including rhinitis, sinusitis and anosmia.
