Ruben Amorim has explained Marcus Rashford’s absence after the wantaway forward was left out of Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s trip to rivals Liverpool.

Rashford, 27, was axed from four matchday squads by Ruben Amorim before returning to the bench for the 2-0 defeat by Newcastle in the final game of last year, and was again missing for the visit to Anfield.

Much has been made of the Englishman’s current situation after Rashford indicated his desire to leave the club in the wake of being dropped for the Manchester derby.

United are willing to let the club’s highest-earner leave in the January transfer window after he publicly stated he wants a ‘new challenge’ and AC Milan have signalled interest in striking a loan move.

Now, Amorim has confirmed the reason behind Rashford’s latest absence and explained it wasn’t related to any disciplinary issue.

Instead, the United boss confirmed the winger was unavailable for selection this week because he has missed training due to an illness that he is still recovering from.

Speaking pre-match at Anfield, Amorim said: ‘Marcus Rashford is still ill, so he’s not available for the game today’.

Rashford has scored seven times against Liverpool in his career – more than any other Premier League club – but will have to watch along from home as United try to pull off a huge upset.

The news of Rashford’s unavailability was expected as Amorim raised concerns that the player had

‘It’s the same situation. At the moment he is ill. He is not training,’ Amorim told his pre-match press conference.

‘We will see in the future, but this is like a normal player, then I make a selection. So it’s the same.

‘I think he is going to be out, this week he is out. We will see, but I think this week he is out.’

Having complained about the lack of time to work with his squad at Carrington, Amorim has at last had a whole week to work with his players on the training ground.
