Pundits were quick to comment on Aston Villa’s ‘lucky’ escape after Diego Carlos elbowed Bryan Gil during Tottenham’s Aston Villa clash on Sunday.

Diego Carlos allowed a clumsy elbow into the face of Bryan Gil, with Tottenham’s penalty appeal denied, despite VAR having another busy match.

Karen Carney was quick to point out the incident when speaking at half-time: ‘He’s elbowed him straight into the face.

‘He’s extremely lucky’ the former Arsenal and Chelsea star added.

Roy Keane added his thoughts: ‘Silly boy, very, very lucky.

Aston Villa were already under threat after picking up three yellow cards in the first half.

At the break, boss Unai Emery opted to take off Polish star Matty Cash after a reckless challenge on Rodrigo Bentancur, resulting in the Uruguayan being substituted off.

Michael Dawson agreed: ‘He puts his elbow straight into Bryan Gil’s face.

‘Why is Diego Carlos getting involved in this?’ Questioned the former Tottenham and Nottingham Forest defender.

Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring early for the hosts, firing them ahead, though Tottenham battle with a swathe of injuries plaguing their squad.

Spurs were already without James Maddison and Micky van de Ven until 2024 due to injury, while Cristian Romero is serving a suspension after being sent off against Chelsea earlier this month.

Tottenham travel to the Etihad for their next Premier League clash against title holders Man City.
