People wanting to reduce their blood sugar levels will have been told several different foods in the past that can help them.

Whilst there are many excellent options, it can become tedious to eat the same foods constantly to regulate your blood sugar.

A doctor has shone new light on what foods to consume and has suggested people try a lesser-known fruit – African Baobab Fruit.

Dr Shelly Coe from Oxford Brookes University’s Centre for Nutrition and Health explained that the ingredients in the fruit help blood sugar levels be regulated.

The African Baobab Fruit is also rich in vitamin C and high in fibre

The doctor said: “We have carried out a number of studies on baobab fruit at our centre and the results have consistently demonstrated that baobab can have a stabilising effect on blood glucose.

“Baobab is rich in fibre which can slow down the rise in blood glucose, helping prevent sugar spikes.

“It is also high in polyphenols which have been shown to affect the release of sugars from carbohydrates into the bloodstream, reducing their conversion into glucose.”

Dr Coe said that partnered with a good diet and some exercise, including baobab in your diet can help with people’s blood sugar.

Andrew Hunt, the CEO of Aduna who provides baobab powder said that the fruit is incredibly popular in Africa with women.

He said: “For centuries the women of Africa have turned to baobab as a source of natural wellbeing.

“Baobab is unusual in that it dries on the branch, producing a natural and organic fruit powder that has six times the amount of vitamin C of an orange, 50 per cent fibre and more antioxidants than any whole fruit.”

With the fruit being rich in soluble fibre and polyphenols, it helps reduce glycaemic response (the rate at which sugar is absorbed in the body).

The fruit is an alternative to the normal foods in reducing blood sugar levels

The fruit benefits the body beyond blood sugar levels too with it significantly helping our immune systems, crucial during the winter.

The large amount of vitamin C inside the fruit supports your immune system and is more easily digestible than a vitamin C tablet.

Baobab can also help with gut health thanks to the rich amount of prebiotic fibre inside of it.

People were recently told too how to reduce blood sugar levels first thing in the morning through combining protein and fibre-rich foods.
