England’s triumphant women’s rugby squad gathered for a celebration with the Princess of Wales on Thursday, though their journey hit an unexpected snag when their transport failed en route.

The team had been scheduled for an exclusive tour of Windsor Castle, but mechanical problems with their coach meant that portion of the visit had to be scrapped.

Nevertheless, the Red Roses made it to their reception with Kate, where the World Cup trophy occupied pride of place at the gathering honouring their remarkable achievement.

The princess, who serves as patron of the Rugby Football Union, welcomed the victorious players to mark their historic tournament success.

Kate had closely followed the Red Roses throughout their campaign, attending their pool stage encounter against Australia in Brighton, where she cheered from the stands.

Her support extended well beyond match days, however. Following the squad’s triumph in the final, the princess made her way to the changing rooms to participate in the players’ celebratory sing-song.

Both the Prince and Princess of Wales were quick to offer their congratulations when England secured victory in September, posting a message that praised both finalists: “You had an outstanding tournament. Both teams should be so proud!”

Prior to the final, the royals had shared an image showing Kate alongside several players wearing cowboy hats.

The Red Roses claimed their third World Cup crown by defeating Canada 33-13 in the final, adding to their previous triumphs in 1994 and 2014.

A record-breaking crowd of 81,885 supporters packed into Twickenham for the showpiece match, with every seat in the stadium filled for the occasion.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer lauded the team’s performance, stating: “You have shown the very best of England and inspired a generation.”

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch echoed the praise, describing it as an “incredible performance” and “a proud moment for English rugby and for our country.”

Several members of the squad present at the reception were recently recognised in the New Year Honours list for their contributions to the sport.

Captain Zoe Stratford, two-time World Cup winner Marlie Packer, and head coach John Mitchell all received OBEs.

The honours continued with MBE awards for vice-captain Megan Jones, impressive back row forward Sadia Kabeya, and Ellie Kildunne, who had been nominated for Sports Personality of the Year.

Ms Kildunne’s standout performances throughout the tournament had earned her widespread recognition, while Ms Packer’s experience proved invaluable as she added a second World Cup winners’ medal to her collection.
