The products are being voluntarily recalled as they “may be contaminated with peanut residue, which is not declared on the pack”.

Peanut allergies can range in severity with mild symptoms including: itchy mouth, tongue and throat, swelling of lips, around the eyes or face, red raised itchy rash (often called nettle rash, hives or urticaria), vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea and runny nose and sneezing, according to Allergy UK.

The health body added more severe symptoms can include: swelling of the tongue and/or throat, difficulty in swallowing or speaking, change in voice (hoarse voice), wheezing (whistling noise) or persistent cough, difficult or noisy breathing, dizziness, collapse, loss of consciousness (due to a drop in blood pressure) and pale, floppy, sudden sleepiness in babies.

Regarding the recall, Allergy UK stated: “If you have purchased one of the affected products with these codes and you suffer from an allergy to peanuts, please do not eat it.

“Instead, please return the product to the Sainsbury’s store where you purchased it from for a full refund or contact our consumer services team at consumercare@haindaniels.com / 0800 0014409.

“Yorkshire Provender apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.

“Only these batches of Yorkshire Provender Jacket & Toast Toppers are affected by this announcement. No other Yorkshire Provender products are impacted.”

Food items can be recalled or withdrawn from stores when a health or safety risk is identified.
