The Prince of Wales and Oman’s Crown Prince Theyazin bin Haitham have joined forces as Co-Patrons of the Jewel of Arabia Expedition, marking their collaboration at a launch event in London.

The two royal heirs attended the Royal Geographical Society, where they unveiled plans for an ambitious environmental initiative focused on Oman’s natural heritage.

The expedition draws inspiration from British explorer Bertram Thomas’s historic 1928 journey along Oman’s southeast coast, during which he made significant scientific discoveries over 42 days.

The initiative aims to raise awareness among young people about Oman’s natural heritage and biodiversity, while addressing environmental challenges faced both locally and globally.

Prince William’s involvement follows his 2019 visit to Oman, where he explored similar themes of conservation and environmental protection.

At the London launch, the royal Co-Patrons viewed historical artifacts connected to Thomas’s original expedition, including maps of Oman and photographs from his journey.

The princes heard presentations from the expedition team and leading British scientists about biodiversity protection in the region.

They also met with expedition supporters and representatives from Omani schools, who will be following the journey as part of their curriculum.

A six-person crew will undertake the expedition, joined by groups of young people from schools and associations across Oman.

The team plans to document their journey through film, podcasts and social media to showcase Oman’s biodiversity and its development as a green energy hub.

A second launch event will take place in Oman this January, further emphasising the expedition’s focus on youth engagement in environmental conservation.

The expedition underscores the centuries-old relationship between the UK and Oman, with both nations maintaining strong partnerships in trade, education, culture, defence and diplomacy.
