Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s statement regarding naming their daughter Lilibet left Queen Elizabeth II furious, a new book has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex named their daughter Lilibet after the nickname close members of the Royal Family had for the late Queen.

The couple said in a public statement that Queen Elizabeth II was supportive of their decision.

However, a new book titled Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story, by Robert Hardman, claims the Queen did not give her support to the decision.

Hardman writes: “One privately recalled that Elizabeth II had been ‘as angry as I’d ever seen her’ in 2021 after the Sussexes announced that she had given them her blessing to call their baby daughter ‘Lilibet’, the Queen’s childhood nickname.

“The couple subsequently fired off warnings of legal action against anyone who dared to suggest otherwise, as the BBC had done.

“However, when the Sussexes tried to co-opt the Palace into propping up their version of events, they were rebuffed.”

Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson said at the time regarding the decision: “The duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement – in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called.

“During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour.

“Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”

Princess Lilibet was born in the US and has hardly visited the UK.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s children Archie and Lilibet did not visit England in 2023 despite Harry making several trips to the country.

Royal commentator Michael Cole told GB News that King Charles will be upset by the lack of time he has been able to spend with his grandchildren based in California.

Cole said: “I think the King feels [hurt] by the fact that he does not see his grandchildren in California.

“It would be quite natural for any man to wish to see his grandchildren.”

The royal commentator added: “He loves his children, he loves his grandchildren, he loves his godchildren.

“The fact he does not see them [Archie and Lilibet] and that is not his wish, will be very upsetting to him.”
