A police dog has “arrested” a high-risk suspect wanted for domestic abuse, drugs and weapons offences.

PD Kyp chased the 26-year-old through the woods after he escaped from police custody.

Within seconds, the dog took the offender to the floor and bit him on the thigh. The dog then waited for his handler to arrive, who then told the man to stop moving and remain still.

That day, officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) uncovered a large stash of Class A drugs at a property in Hyde, Manchester.

The individual was arrested on suspicion of serious assault, possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and possession of offensive weapons, including zombie knifes and machetes.

However, whilst handcuffed, the 26-year-old managed to slip away from officers and ran into the nearby woodland.

Superintendent Paul Walker, Specialist Operations, said: “As he was wanted for serious offences and made off into the woodland area, PD Kyp was deployed to chase and detain the man.

“PD Kyp captured him within seconds and on doing so, the man kicked Kyp in the head and body several times.

“This resulted in PD Kyp biting the man around the thigh and taking him to the floor, waiting for his handler to arrive.”

The 26-year-old was then further arrested on suspicion of escaping from lawful custody.

Walker continued: “This is a great example of the type of work our officers are doing every day – arresting a dangerous domestic abuse suspect quickly. One third of all GMP arrests are made in relation to domestic abuse related offences.

“We have also managed to take a number of dangerous weapons off the streets and away from.

“Sometimes we will have to use specialist resources to detain dangerous offenders, as was done in this instance. Using a Police Dog is just one of the many resources we have at our disposal.”

Earlier this week, a police dog sniffed out an alleged drug smuggler who was operating a drone heading towards HMP Liverpool.

The drone attempted to land in the prison courtyard before flying towards a nearby field.

Officers spotted the drone and followed the operator into the field, with police dog Ike finding the suspect hiding in a bush.

A package attached to the drone was found to contain cannabis resin, tobacco, mobile phone notes, drill bits and sim cards, Merseyside Police said.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conveying a prohibited article into a prison, possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of cocaine and cannabis with intent to supply.
