The decline in oestrogen that accompanies ageing can cause noticeable changes to the texture and complexion of the skin, but there are ways to prevent this.

Understanding when and where to make adjustments in your skin care routine can extend a youthful glow well into your 60s.

Fortunately, the internet is brimming with skin care methods tried and tested by senior women with exceptional skin.

Dr Anjuli Patel, recently took to her TikTok to reveal how her mother has maintained a youthful look as she enters her 60s.

She highlighted how a combination of consistent care and selective treatments helped her mum maintain her fresh appearance.

While genetics have played a role in her mother’s naturally youthful look, skin care routines have been crucial to preserving her complexion, noted Dr Patel.

Growing up in Kenya’s intense sun, Dr Patel’s mother learned early on about the importance of sun protection for avoiding common issues like melasma and pigmentation.

“She actually wears SPF every single day, she reapplies it every few hours,” Dr Patel revealed.

This consistent approach to UV protection has proven crucial, with Dr Patel noting that her mother “does not roast in the sun” despite her upbringing in a sunny climate.

Beyond daily sun protection, Dr Patel’s mother has embraced medical-grade interventions to maintain her complexion.

Medical-grade retinol has become a crucial part of her regimen, noted the skin care expert.

Last year, she underwent micro-needling with radio frequency treatment, specifically targeting skin texture concerns.

“As you lose collagen with age, your pores look more visible, so she wanted to kind of minimise their appearance,” Dr Patel explained.

While embracing some treatments like Botox, Dr Patel stressed that her mother has maintained a balanced approach to anti-ageing to keep looking “age-appropriate”.

“She was never keen on having filler done, she wanted to look age-appropriate but also still maintain the way that she looked,” Dr Patel shared.

For additional information on the best anti-ageing skin care, consulting a dermatologist is advised.
