Staying social, mentally active and relaxed are all incredibly important if you are trying to add years to your life.

While you can not guarantee what age you live to, healthy habits will put you in good stead.

Dr Karl Knopf, who focuses on the health and fitness of older adults, said nutrition and exercise are, of course, important.

However, social activities, challenging yourself mentally and staying relaxed are also key factors for a long and healthy life.

Staying social is great for your health, the doctor explained

Engage in social activities

The doctor told GB News: “Maintaining social connections reduces stress, combats loneliness, and improves mental health, all of which are linked to greater longevity.

“Join community groups, take up hobbies, volunteer, or simply prioritise spending time with family and friends regularly.”

There are many cognitive benefits of staying social, and Britons will see the biggest health boost come from positive social connections.

The expert continued: “Positive social interactions foster emotional health, reduce stress, and encourage a sense of purpose and belonging.

“Surround yourself with uplifting individuals and partake in group activities that bring joy, such as book clubs, sports teams, or art classes.”

Challenge yourself mentally

Dr Knopf continued: “Keeping the brain active helps prevent cognitive decline and promotes mental sharpness.

“Engage in puzzles, learn a new skill or language, read, or try memory-enhancing games to stimulate your brain and keep it engaged.”

Engage in relaxation activities

Stress can wreak havoc on your health in many ways, increasing the risk of illness and even causing weight gain.

Making conscious efforts to stay relaxed can reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The expert said: “Chronic stress accelerates ageing and increases the risk of chronic diseases. Relaxation practices help counteract this by promoting mental and physical well-being.

“Practice mindfulness, meditation, deep breathing, or yoga. Even simple activities like walking in nature or listening to soothing music can help manage stress.”
