Migrant crisis: ‘You say it’s unsustainable

Ex-Tory MP Tom Pursglove suffered a bruising encounter on GB News as he was grilled over projections that first-generation migrants could make up a quarter of Britain’s population by 2035.

The former Immigration Minister struggled to defend the previous Conservative government’s record as GB News Political Editor Christopher Hope presented him with damning figures from a new report.

Christopher Hope said: “Tom, you brought in measures with James Cleverly to stop it and after that, after the horse has bolted.

“Those numbers are changing societies to changing communities. You say it’s unsustainable. You did it.”

Tom Pursglove said: “I did something about it.”

Chopper hit back: “Only after the event.”

The Tory explained: “Actually, one thing that I thought was really noteworthy was Rishi [Sunak] in his interview this week, making the point that he wished that he’d pulled these levers earlier. I wish that we’d pulled these levers earlier.”

Christopher said: “You told voters you would do all these things in five elections. You didn’t do a thing about it.”

Pursglove responded by bringing Martin Daubney into the conversation and pointing out his role in getting Britain to leave the EU, saying: “Well, one thing again on that front is that as members of the European Union, Martin [Daubney], you and I were in the same place in terms of campaigning to leave the EU.

“One of the reasons for that was because I wanted to determine our own destiny when it came to immigration. We could do nothing about EU free movement. We can do something about this.”

It comes as Centre for Migration Control analysis, exclusively shared with GB News, forecasted the UK population will surge to over 73 million within a decade.

Almost 25 per cent of these will be first-generation migrants, the report claims.

The report projects that first-generation migrants will number 18,222,000 by 2035.

This would represent approximately 24 per cent of the UK’s total population.

Research has also revealed that official forecasts have consistently underestimated migration levels. Initial estimates for 2022 suggested net migration of 606,000, later revised dramatically upward to 872,000.

Similarly, 2023 projections were initially set at 740,000 before being corrected to 906,000.

Robert Bates, Research Director of the CMC, warned of the consequences of such rapid demographic change.

“The strain being placed on our public services by mass migration is extraordinary,” he said.
