Parts of the UK will see temperatures of up to 21C on Wednesday even as much of the country is battered by heavy rain.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain that covers the West Midlands, the South West, the North West and Wales from 6pm on Tuesday until midday on Wednesday.

A separate yellow rain warning is in place for large parts of Northern Ireland between midnight and midday on Wednesday.

The yellow warning means there is a small chance of interruption to power supplies and a small chance of homes and businesses being flooded.

Remarkably, the weather warnings were issued even as the Met Office said the south and south east of England could see temperatures of up to 21C on Wednesday afternoon, thanks to mild Atlantic air sweeping northwards into the UK.

However, it is the wet weather that will eventually win out this week, with widespread rain forecast from Friday to Sunday.

Met Office spokesperson Oliver Claydon told Yahoo News UK on Tuesday: “We could still see some higher temperatures briefly for a time on Wednesday.

“There is a chance of 20C – possibly 21C – in the south east of England in areas around London. This is dependent on a spell of brighter conditions in the south east corner with more cloud around for the rest of the UK.”

However, he said: “It will still be wet across many other parts of the UK on Wednesday too, with heavy rain especially in western parts. So the higher temperatures are really confined to the south east of England.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, Claydon said: “After a drier day on Thursday for most, conditions will then turn unsettled again with wind and rain approaching from the North West and spreading across the UK though Friday and, for the east of England, into Saturday morning. Further wet and windy weather is expected on Sunday too.”
