Meghan Markle has spoken about missing home and feeling emotional during the festive season at a dinner for refugee Afghan women in California.

It comes after Prince Harry is set to return to the UK without Meghan Markle for his court case against News Group Newspapers in January.

The Duchess of Sussex told the women that people “miss home” saying that the holiday season “brings up so much emotion for people.”

She said: “You miss home, you miss your country, and also can find comfort in the new community that you have here.”

“I’m grateful that we are able to be a part of that community,” Meghan told Marie Claire.

“From my standpoint, I think part of why we wanted to make sure we had this opportunity to all be together again — so many of us — right now is that as the holidays come up, and have already begun in many regards, it brings up so much emotion for people.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex started the Welcome Project to support programmes for Afghan women who have resettled in the United States in 2023.

The Duke of Sussex is not expected to travel to the UK for Christmas with the Royal Family this year as tensions remain frosty following the fallout of Harry’s tell-all memoir Spare.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told GB News that he does not expect Meghan Markle to travel to the UK for the trial.

Fitzwilliams said: “I think that will be done separately, there are several reasons why Meghan will not come to the UK at the moment.

“It is perfectly obvious why, just look at the opinion polls.

“Of course, there is a rift with the Royal Family, there is no reason for her to come.”
