Bayern Munich Matthijs De Ligt has revealed what the linesman said to him after his late goal against Real Madrid was controversially ruled out.

Real were leading 4-3 on aggregate when De Ligt found the net deep into injury time at the end of the second half.

The linesman had already flagged for offside, which meant that VAR couldn’t intervene, and the goal wasn’t allowed to stand.

De Ligt was let hugely frustrated by the decision, especially given that his goal would have taken the game to extra-time.

As it transpired, Real prevailed, with substitute Joselu the hero with two goals.

Bayern’s Noussair Mazraoui had been deemed to be offside before De Ligt had struck the ball

De Ligt revealed that the linesman apologised to him for the decision.

De Ligt told beIN SPORTS: ‘If it’s offside, it’s offside. But I think we made rules in football and the rules are if’s not a clear offside – which it wasn’t because I don’t see it yet if it’s offside or not – you have to keep playing.

‘If you go in the last minutes and you whistle like this, I think it’s a big mistake. If it’s offside or not you can check it, but if you don’t check it, how can you see it? The second goal Rudiger is almost offside. If he whistles ok, but now there’s a difference and this is a shame.

‘The linesman said to me I’m sorry, I made a mistake, I can’t buy anything for that. I’m not the type of person who wants to blame a loss or win on the referee but it means you have to win because you win 2-1. I think if it’s a rule, it’s a rule.’

Paul Scholes claimed that the linesman was too quick to put his flag up.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Scholes said: ‘I’m not sure it’s offside. For the linesman to put his flag up… he’s too hasty. He’s got to wait.’

Bayern’s Noussair Mazraoui had been deemed to be offside before De Ligt had struck the ball.

Replays showed that it was a close call and that Mazraoui may well have been onside.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg, Bayern took the lead in the second leg through Alphonso Davies.

However, after Joselu’s brace, along with De Ligt’s goal being ruled out, it was Real who secured their place in the final.
