GB News’s Home and Security Editor Mark White has described the recent drone activity over US military bases in the UK as “a real head scratcher”.

Multiple unidentified drones have been spotted flying over three US Air Force bases in Suffolk and Norfolk, with the situation still ongoing as of Tuesday.

The unmanned aerial vehicles were sighted near RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and RAF Feltwell, prompting investigations by both American and British defence officials.

The incidents, which began between 20 and 25 November, have raised significant security concerns, with US military units continuing to monitor the airspace.

According to White, these were not typical hobbyist drones, with military sources suggesting around half a dozen were involved in what appeared to be coordinated flights.

The drones were spotted over RAF Lakenheath, home to the 48th Fighter Wing which operates F-15 Strike Eagle and F-35A Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

RAF Mildenhall, which houses strategic surveillance aircraft and aerial refuelling tankers, was also targeted.

RAF Feltwell was the third base affected in what defence sources told CNN appeared to be coordinated activity involving five to six drones.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

White noted reports of F-15 Strike Eagle aircraft potentially being deployed to intercept the drones, with flight tracking websites showing multiple aircraft circling the area.

However, he pointed out that these intercept missions have not been officially confirmed by military authorities.

The incidents under investigation occurred during a five-day period between 20th and 25th November.

Aviation enthusiasts on social media had suggested that F-15E Strike Eagles were launched to investigate the drone sightings during the incursions.

The US Air Force confirmed they are actively monitoring the situation, though none of the incursions have impacted residents or critical infrastructure.

White expressed concern about the identity of those behind the drone activity, stating: “There’s no evidence that the drones were gathering sensitive intelligence or posed a significant threat, but no evidence that they weren’t because they don’t know who is behind them.”

He suggested that “suspicion will turn to the likes of Russia because Western intelligence agencies and militaries are more than aware of the potential grey zone threat posed by Russia.”

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said they “take threats seriously and maintain robust measures at defence sites.”

The US Air Forces in Europe spokesperson confirmed they are “working with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities, and assets.”
