Four Manchester neighbourhoods are set to receive up to £20m each as part of a new government-backed initiative, putting power back into the hands of our communities.

The Pride in Place programme aims to reshape our neighbourhoods over the next ten years, delivering funding into areas which matter the most to local people.

What this could mean is more money to make our streets safer, to rejuvenate our district centres, improve and enhance community spaces and support new events and activities for residents.

This is an additional boost to Manchester City Councils already existing plans plans to improve our neighbourhoods.

This includes the £60m investment into Gorton Town Centre and the initial £25m into Moston Lane, money spent bringing new housing, infrastructure and public space to these communities.

The new Government investment will help boost Manchester’s plans to invest in every neighbourhood across the city.

In Manchester the areas which have been chosen* to take part in the Pride in Place programme are:

  • Clayton Vale (parts of Clayton, Openshaw, Miles Platting, Newton Heath)

  • Gorton South (parts of Longsight, Gorton and Abbey Hey, Levenshulme)

  • Benchill South and Wythenshawe Central

  • Harpurhey South and Monsall (parts of Harpurhey, Moston, Crumpsall)

Over the next ten years each of these areas will receive up to £20m to implement a wide range of improvements, centred around the needs of its residents.

Now is when we need their help.

A survey has been launched that will help shape the coming decisions on how and where this money is spent. The Council wants to hear people’s opinions on the places they live, what do they like, what don’t they like, and what they think could be improved.

This survey is open now, and will run until the end of June.

Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Manchester is leading the charge on securing investment across the city, not just in the city centre.

“Since 2022 we have developed neighbourhood investment plans to rejuvenate high streets, improve facilities and build homes that everyone can afford.

“Manchester welcomes the £80 million boost from Government from the Pride in Place Programme and this investment will be hugely significant for Manchester. Feeling proud of your street and neighbourhood is vital and that’s why we welcome this additional funding, building on what we as a Council have already committed.

“What makes this funding different is that we want residents to tell us how it should be spent to improve their areas – led by communities, for communities. This is a huge opportunity for people to shape the places where they live and to make a lasting impact which could last generations.

“Ultimately we want everyone to feel pride in the communities that they call home and we do not underestimate the importance of creating communities where people feel safe, secure, and where they belong.”
