Chorlton Library has entered into a unique partnership with the City of Melbourne Libraries in Australia.

It will bring Manchester and Melbourne, two UNESCO Cities of Literature, closer together through a programme of literature and cultural exchange.

The partnership which is in its infancy will develop in the coming months and years.  Melbourne libraries have already donated books about First Nation culture to Manchester Libraries which will be held in Chorlton Library and will be available for loan across the city.

In return, Manchester Libraries will be donating books relating to Manchester which will include books from renowned author Jackie Kay, who has a special relationship with her local Chorlton Library, having previously taken part in the Chorlton Book Festival.

One of the first planned events is for the City of Melbourne Libraries to take part in next June’s Festival of Libraries organised by Manchester City of Literature with more events and initiatives to follow.

Councillor John Hacking, Executive Member for Skills, Employment and Leisure said:

” This is a new partnership instigated through Chorlton Library, one of our primary neighbourhood libraries, which although in its early stages will develop in time.  We are really proud of all our libraries in Manchester, and we are excited to bring new collaborations that we know will be of interest to many residents.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to work with colleagues in Melbourne, a city which we have much in common with, and a city which shares many similarities to Manchester, both of which are recognised for their vibrant literary culture.  We want to develop this friendship to share, learn and explore how the partnership progresses in a way which is beneficial to both cities, fostering even more literary links.”

Head of Community and City Services at the City of Melbourne Libraries, Councillor Gladys Liu said:

“Cultural exchange is an important way we learn more about cities around the world – and we hope our gift fosters shared connection and understanding between Melbourne and Manchester.”

“This specially curated collection celebrates the resilience, creativity, and deep cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.”
